How to reduce risks of miscarriage

Miscarriages are estimated to affect 20% of all pregnancies. They usually occur in the first trimester (3 months). Thankfully completing a preconception period, where nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, weight issues and the detection of parasites and fungus such as Candida can be addressed, will in most cases prevent miscarriages occurring.

Some common causes of miscarriage are listed below;

  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Parasites , candida genito-urinary infections
  • Being overweight
  • Stress
  • Exposure to environmental chemicals
  • Low levels of vitamin D
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Poor quality eggs and sperm
  • Fibroids in some instances may cause miscarriage
  • Incompetent cervix

Nutritional deficiencies and exposure to environmental toxins can cause sperm cells and eggs to become a poor quality which in turn may end in miscarriage. Hormonal imbalances especially low levels of progesterone can cause miscarriages because adequate levels of this hormone are needed to prepare the endometrial lining for the fertilized egg. If progesterone levels are too low due to delayed ovulation a miscarriage is likely. This is a common cause of miscarriage especially if you have endured PMS symptoms over the years. Taking specific vitamins and medicinal herbs to treat hormonal imbalance works very effectively. Stress can contribute to all of the above factors. Recent studies suggest that low levels of Vitamin D can also cause miscarriage. Overweight people should take notice as their vitamin D levels tend to be stored in their fat cells due to the vitamin being fat soluble and not circulating in the blood where it is needed. Weight loss therefore is important. A qualified naturopath will be able prescribe a specific herbal formula to balance your hormones.
